Zara AI interview prep: how the micro1 interview works and how to practice
Applying to micro1 — or to an Alignerr project that asks for a "Zara interview" — means your first interview is a spoken conversation with an AI recruiter called Zara. Here is what that interview is, according to micro1's own pages, and how to rehearse it out loud before it counts.
Free: 1 full practice interview a day, no card.
Facts checked against micro1's own pages on
Colloqa is not affiliated with micro1 or Alignerr, and we have no inside knowledge of how Zara scores you. Every fact about the interview below comes from micro1's and Alignerr's own pages, linked next to it. The example questions are ours, written to match the kinds of questions micro1 describes — not micro1's actual questions.
What the Zara AI interview is
Zara is micro1's AI recruiter. Candidates for micro1's talent network take an AI interview with Zara before any human sees them, and some Alignerr projects require the same interview.
- Format
- A spoken, real-time conversation with Zara. She asks open-ended questions and you answer out loud. You can take it on demand, at any time, from anywhere. (source)
- Length
- Between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on how many skills are evaluated — roughly 7 minutes per skill. (source)
- What is asked
- Open-ended technical questions for the role you chose, and scenario-based questions about how you think, solve problems and communicate. Technical roles add a coding challenge; annotator roles add a human data exercise. (source)
- Follow-ups
- Zara adjusts her next questions to what you answered, and she can answer your clarifying questions during the interview. (source)
- Proctoring
- Optional, switched on per interview. When it is on: share your whole screen, keep your webcam on, use one screen. Breaking a rule (a second monitor, stopping the screen share) pauses the interview until it is fixed. (source)
- After the interview
- The session is recorded and human recruiters review it. You see right away whether you met the certification criteria; if you did not, you can request feedback. Skills you were certified in after July 2025 can carry over to a new role, so you may get a shorter interview or skip it. (source)
- Alignerr
- Some Alignerr jobs require a Zara AI interview (or a domain assessment) as an extra step; applicants get instructions directly when it applies. (source)
How the interview runs
- You pick the skill or role. micro1 asks you to choose one core skill or job type to be evaluated on — the whole interview is built around it.
- You start whenever you are ready. The interview is on demand. Use a quiet room, a working microphone and a stable connection; if the interview is proctored, a webcam and one screen.
- Zara asks, you answer out loud. Open questions about your field, then scenarios. Each answer shapes the next question, so a vague answer usually earns a follow-up asking for specifics.
- A role exercise, if your role has one. A coding challenge for technical roles, a human data exercise for annotation roles.
- Result, then human review. You see whether you met the certification criteria; recruiters review the recording before anyone is matched to a project.
The kinds of questions to expect
micro1 describes two kinds of questions: technical questions for your role and scenario-based ones. Below are examples of each kind — written by us, to practise with. Zara's real questions differ for every candidate.
Technical, about your role
Checks that you actually know the work — and can explain it in plain words.
- Walk me through a project where you used [your main skill]. What did you do yourself?
- Why did you choose that approach over the obvious alternative?
- What would you check first if [a typical problem in your field] happened?
Scenario-based
Checks how you think and communicate when there is no single right answer.
- You disagree with a guideline you were told to follow. What do you do?
- Two sources you rely on contradict each other, and the deadline is today. How do you decide?
- Explain [a concept from your field] to someone who has never heard of it.
Follow-ups on your own answer
The part that is hardest to prepare from a list, because it depends on what you just said.
- You said "we improved it" — what exactly did you do, and how did you measure it?
- What would you do differently next time?
- Can you give me a specific example of that?
Replace the brackets with your own field before you practise. The point is not to memorise answers but to get used to explaining your work out loud, with specifics, while someone asks "why".
How to prepare for the Zara interview
- Choose one skill and go deep. micro1 itself advises picking one core skill or job type. Prepare two or three real projects in that skill you can talk about in detail.
- Answer with a real example, then the result. Situation, what you did, what happened — in a minute or two. Concrete numbers and names of tools beat general claims, and they leave Zara less to follow up on.
- Expect "why?" after every answer. Because the questions adapt to you, the follow-up is where the interview is decided. For each project, know why you made the key decision and what you would change.
- Ask when a question is unclear. Zara can answer clarifying questions. Asking is better than answering a question you guessed at.
- Think out loud in the exercise. In a coding or data exercise, say what you are checking and why. An interview that is recorded and reviewed rewards visible reasoning.
- Set up as if it is proctored. Quiet room, one screen, other apps closed, microphone and webcam tested. If proctoring is on, that is what it requires anyway.
- Rehearse out loud, not in your head. Reading an answer and saying it are different skills. Say your two or three stories out loud at least once before the real interview — ideally to someone, or something, that interrupts you with follow-ups.
micro1's free practice and practising with Colloqa
micro1 offers its own free practice: on its Interview Prep page you pick a job title and take an 18-minute AI practice interview with feedback. Do it — it is the closest thing to the real format, and micro1 recommends it.
Colloqa is a different tool for the same goal: rehearsing an interview out loud with an AI interviewer that follows up on what you say. Use it for the parts one practice interview does not cover.
- Repetition. Run the same kind of interview again and again until the answers come easily. The free plan is 1 full session a day, no card.
- Your role, your job posting. Set up the interview for the role you applied for, or paste the job description, and the questions are built around it.
- Follow-ups. The AI interviewer asks "why", "what exactly did you do" and "give me an example" when an answer is vague — the same pressure the adaptive format puts on you.
- Feedback on how you answered. After each session: what worked, what fell apart and the one thing to drill next, plus a skill profile tracked across sessions. The detailed written feedback is part of the paid plan.
- 12 languages. Practise in your own language first, then in English — useful when the real interview is in your second language.

Yes. According to micro1, Zara adjusts its questions to your answers, so a general answer usually gets a follow-up asking for specifics, and you can ask Zara to clarify a question.
It can be. micro1 lets proctoring be switched on per interview; when it is, you share your whole screen, keep your webcam on and use a single screen. Prepare as if it is on.
Yes. micro1 says the session is recorded and human recruiters review it to match candidates to roles. You see right away whether you met the certification criteria.
micro1 says candidates who do not meet the certification criteria can request feedback. Skills certified after July 2025 carry over, so a later interview for another role may be shorter.
Take micro1's free 18-minute practice interview on its Interview Prep page, then rehearse your answers out loud with an AI interviewer that asks follow-ups — for example in Colloqa, where one full session a day is free. Practise on your strongest skill and your two or three best projects.
No. Colloqa is an independent interview-practice tool. We describe the Zara interview from micro1's public pages so you can prepare; our AI interviewer is not Zara and our questions are not micro1's.
